Thursday 5/1/2008: Sacramento's Zima named Pitcher of the Month New York's pitcher Susan Ward is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in April. He had an ERA of just 2.57 in 35 innings of work in which he struck out 23 hitters. His record in April is 5-0. Madeline Zima couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His record of 4-1 in 5 was among the leagues best this month. In 37 innings of work he allowed just 24 hits while striking out 29, compiling an ERA of just 2.92. |
Thursday 5/1/2008: Dallas' Qi earns Batter of the Month award Dallas' centerfielder Shu Qi had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .471 and hit .427, while driving in 22 runs. The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Katherine Heigl, Atlanta's starting second baseman. Katherine was on fire, hitting .380 with 9 homeruns and 27 RBI. |
Monday 4/28/2008: Player of the Week honors go to Swank and Kozar The American League's best player of the week was Boston's Hilary Swank, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. In 28 at bats he hit .429 with 4 HR and 13 RBI. Hilary managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Hilary is hitting .293 this year, with 27 hits in 92 at bats. He has driven in 25 runs, slugging .576. He's 1st in the American League in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns! It's the 4th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia's shortstop Heather Kozar. He hit .414 with 13 RBI and slugged 1.103 in 29 at bats. |
Monday 4/21/2008: Cartwright (BAL) and Sokoloff (SAC) win P.O.W. award The American League's best player of the week was Baltimore's Bec Cartwright, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He hit .531 with 7 RBI and slugged .688 in 32 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. The National League's best player of the week was Sacramento's Marla Sokoloff, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He hit .391 with 10 RBI and slugged 1.087 in 23 at bats. Marla is hitting .327 this year, with 18 hits in 55 at bats. He has driven in 11 runs, slugging .691. |
Wednesday 4/16/2008: Cleopatra Higgins homers three times against Atlanta ST. LOUIS - St. Louis beat Atlanta 9-8, but that was not the real story of the game. Cleopatra Higgins was, as he went deep three times. A pitch from Emmanuelle Chriqui in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 377 feet from home plate in right field. His 2nd blast, a two-run homerun off Emmanuelle Chriqui in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 412 feet from home plate. In the 4th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Emmanuelle Chriqui. The game was tied, 7-7, after the blast. Overall he finished with 4 hits in 5 AB, scoring three times and collecting 7 RBI. The National League's best player of the week was Los Angeles' Anna Kournikova, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Anna went 9 for 17 (.529), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 4 RBI. |
Sunday 4/13/2008: Kaci Brown (ATL) will miss 7 weeks ATLANTA - Atlanta is without its southpaw Kaci Brown for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ophelie Winter in a game against Sacramento. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Strained Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. |
Thursday 4/10/2008: Sacramento's Winter wins Player of the Week award Angelina Jolie from Detroit wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Angelina was on fire, hitting .500 with 5 HR and 7 RBI. Ophelie Winter wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Winter helped his team with an average of .556 and 11 RBI in 18 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games. |
Wednesday 4/9/2008: Mallika Sherawat pounds three dingers LOS ANGELES - Mallika Sherawat powered Los Angeles to a 10-6 win over Atlanta. He did it in style by homering three times. His 1st shot, a two-run homerun off Erica Blasberg in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in left field. It tied the ballgame at 4. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Erica Blasberg. A 375 foot drive to left field marked his 3rd bomb, a two-run homerun off Charlotte Church in the 7th inning. Mallika collected 4 hits in 4 trips to the plate, stroking a double, scoring three runs and driving in 7 runs. His homerun total this year is 4, along with 9 RBI. Brandy Norwood was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 6/10/2007. |
Tuesday 4/8/2008: Ellen Woglom (BOS) will miss 6 weeks BOSTON - Boston's season took a blow when Ellen Woglom suffered a serious injury in the game against Texas.
